More about Worldreader

Worldreader is a currated collection of works by African and Indian authors and publishers.

Worldreader is on a mission to bring digital books to every child and her family, so that they can improve their lives. Using e-readers, mobile phones and other digital technology, the organization reaches readers in 50 countries, providing them with over 15,500 book titles in 44 languages from Afrikaans to Swahili. Worldreader works with over 140 publishers to acquire and digitize the most compelling and relevant content for our readers; 70% of its  library comes from African and Indian publishers.

Literacy is transformative: it increases earning potential, decreases inequality, improves health outcomes and breaks the cycle of poverty (UNESCO). Yet there are 740 million illiterate people in the world and 250 million children of primary school age who lack basic reading and writing skills (UNESCO). Books are necessary for the development of these skills, and still 50% of schools in Africa have few or no books at all (SAQMEC).

Since 2010, Worldread has reached 2.6 million people, and the data show this is changing people’s lives. Students in the e-reader programs improved 94% in mother tongue oral reading fluency after just 5 months, and girls in the program improved twice as fast in oral reading fluency as girls in neighboring schools, closing an existing gender gap (iREAD2 midterm study). Reading on Worldreader Mobile is particularly popular with women, who spend on average 207 minutes reading per month, compared to 32 minutes for men (UNESCO).
