Los Angeles

Blacks and mulattoes did not face legal discrimination until after California was handed over to the United States in 1848. Because many blacks were enslaved until abolition in 1865, few blacks migrated to Los Angeles before then. When the Santa Fe Railroad was built, blacks increasingly migrated to Los Angeles. By 1900, blacks numbered 2,131 and represented the second largest population in California.
